Inzoological nomenclature, asubphylum is ataxonomic rank below the rank ofphylum.

The taxonomic rank of "subdivision" infungi andplant taxonomy is equivalent to "subphylum" in zoological taxonomy. Some plant taxonomists have also used the rank of subphylum, for instancemonocotyledons as a subphylum of phylumAngiospermae andvertebrates as a subphylum of phylumChordata.[1]

Subphylum is:

  1. subordinate to thephylum
  2. superordinate to theinfraphylum, which is in turn superordinate tomicrophylum.

Where convenient, subphyla in turn can be divided intoinfraphyla; in turn such aninfraphylum also would be superordinate to any classes or superclasses in thehierarchy.
