Thesuboccipital nerve (first cervical dorsal ramus) is thedorsal primary ramus of the firstcervical nerve (C1). It exits thespinal cord between theskull and the firstcervical vertebra, theatlas.[1]
It lies within thesuboccipital triangle along with thevertebral artery, where the artery enters theforamen magnum.
It suppliesmuscles of thesuboccipital triangle, therectus capitis posterior major,obliquus capitis superior, andobliquus capitis inferior. The suboccipital nerve also innervatesrectus capitis posterior minor.
