Thesubcostal nerve (anterior division of the twelfth thoracic nerve[1]) is a mixed motor and sensory nerve contributing to thelumbar plexus. It runs along the lower border of thetwelfth rib, often gives a communicating branch to the firstlumbar nerve, and passes under thelateral lumbocostal arch.
It then runs in front of thequadratus lumborum, innervates thetransversus, and passes forward between it and theabdominal internal oblique to be distributed in the same manner as thelower intercostal nerves.
It communicates with theiliohypogastric nerve and theilioinguinal nerve of thelumbar plexus,[1][2] and gives a branch to thepyramidalis muscle and thequadratus lumborum muscle.[3] It also gives off a lateral cutaneous branch that supplies sensory innervation to the skin over the hip.
