String Quartet No. 5 (Mendelssohn)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TheString Quartet No. 5 in E-flat major,Op. 44, No. 3, was composed byFelix Mendelssohn in 1837–1838 and completed on February 6, 1838.[1] The piece is part of the Op. 44 set of 3 string quartets that Mendelssohn dedicated to theCrown Prince of Sweden.

Movements

[edit]

Like all of Mendelssohn'sstring quartets, this work has fourmovements:

  1. Allegro vivace
  2. Scherzo: Assai leggiero vivace
  3. Adagio non troppo
  4. Molto allegro con fuoco

A typical performance lasts around 35 minutes.

Robin Wildstein Garvin has suggested that theslow movement belongs to the 'religious adagio type', deriving fromorgan pieces that aimed to inspire religious contemplation through a devotional atmosphere.[1] It follows aternary form with a newtheme presented in the B section.
