TheStrickland River is a major river in theWestern Province ofPapua New Guinea. It is the longest and largesttributary of theFly River with a total length of 824 km (512 mi) including theLagaip River the farthest distanceriver source of the Strickland River. It was named afterEdward Strickland, vice-president of theGeographical Society of Australasia[3] by theNew Guinea Exploration Expedition of 1885.

ThePorgera Gold Mine, run byBarrick Gold, is amine near Strickland, which is the source of environmental concerns in the area. Since 1992, Barrick Gold has dumped mine waste, particularlymetal particulates ortailings, directly into the river. This process ofriverine disposal by the mine has led to much controversy, with numerous deaths and environmental problems being blamed on the metal particulates.
