The striated starling wasformally described in 1788 by the German naturalistJohann Friedrich Gmelin in his revised and expanded edition ofCarl Linnaeus'sSystema Naturae. He placed it with the rollers in thegenusCoracias and coined thebinomial nameCoracias striata.[2] The specific epithet is fromLatinstriatus meaning "striated".[3] Gmelin based his account on the "Blue-striped roller" that had been described and illustrated in 1781 by the English ornithologistJohn Latham in his bookA General Synopsis of Birds.[4] The striated starling is now placed in the genusAplonis that was introduced in 1836 byJohn Gould.[5]
