Strandzha dialect

Dialect of Bulgarian

TheStrandzha dialect is a dialect of theBulgarian language, member of theRup or Southeastern Bulgarian dialects. The present range of the dialect includes the Bulgarian part ofStrandzha. In the past, the dialect was spoken on a much larger territory and extended far down intoEastern Thrace, now inTurkey. Following theBalkan Wars, the Bulgarian population there was forced to flee toBulgaria, settling mostly in the regions ofBurgas andVarna in easternBulgaria.

Phonological and morphological characteristics

  • Existence of long soft consonantsл/l/, н/n/, к/k/ andг/ɡ/:сиренн҄е[1] vs. formal Bulgarianсирене (cheese)
  • Transition of softt andd into softk andg (also typical for theKotel-Elena-Dryanovo dialect, cf. article):вæжг҄и vs. formal Bulgarianвежди (eyebrows)
  • The masculine definite article is-ът after a hard syllable and-ет after a soft syllable:гърбът,мъжет vs. formal Bulgarianгърбът,мъжът (the back, the man)
  • A number of lexical peculiarities, e.g.потон vs. common Bulgarianпод (floor)
