Storm Reid (born July 1, 2003) is an American actress. After early roles in the television showA Cross to Bear (2012), the drama film12 Years a Slave (2013), and the superhero filmSleight (2016), she played the lead role ofMeg Murry in the fantasy filmA Wrinkle in Time (2018). She garnered further recognition with roles in the thriller filmDon't Let Go (2019) and the horror filmThe Invisible Man (2020).

Reid had supporting roles in theNetflix miniseriesWhen They See Us (2019) and theHBO drama seriesEuphoria (2019–2022). For playingRiley Abel in the episode "Left Behind" of the drama seriesThe Last of Us (2023), Reid won thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. She has since played leading roles in the mystery filmMissing (2023) and the horror filmThe Nun II (2023).

Early life

Reid was born on July 1, 2003, inAtlanta,Georgia, to Rodney and Robyn Simpson Reid.[1][2] She is the youngest of four siblings, which include her brother Josh and two sisters, Iman and Paris.[3] From an early age, Reid aspired to become an actress, and at the age of 9, she and her family moved toLos Angeles for her to pursue acting.[2]

Career

Reid began her professional acting career at a young age, debuting with thetelevision filmA Cross To Bear in 2012. In 2013, she starred as Emily in thehistorical drama film12 Years a Slave, which received critical acclaim.[4] In 2016, she starred as Tina in thescience fiction drama filmSleight, the younger sister of the film's protagonist, Bo.[5] The film was a success, and was received positively.[6][7] Also in 2016, she starred as Aki in the filmLea to the Rescue, which was part of theAmerican Girl film series.[8][9]

In 2017, she appeared as Patricia in the comedy-drama filmA Happening of Monumental Proportions, which had been received negatively by critics.[10] Better received was her role asMeg Murry inAva DuVernay'sA Wrinkle in Time, which was based onthe novel of the same name.[11] In spite of the film emerging as abox-office bomb, Reid's performance earned praise from critics, with some noting her take on the character as a highlight of the film.[12] Writing forThe Hollywood Reporter,Josh Spiegel stated that "Reid is one of the film's biggest assets overall; Meg's arc from being crippled by self-doubt to embracing her faults and her dysfunctional family is wonderfully realized through her expressive and subtle work."[13] For the role, she earned a nomination for theTeen Choice Award for Choice Fantasy Movie Actress and theNAACP Image Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Role in a Motion Picture.[14][15][16]

In 2019, Reid starred as Lisa in two episodes of the critically acclaimedNetflix limited seriesWhen They See Us.[17][18] and began portraying the main role of Gia Bennett, the younger sister of the series' protagonist Rue, in theHBO teen drama seriesEuphoria.[19][20][21] That same year, she voiced Nia in theHulu seriesThe Bravest Knight,[22] and co-starred withDavid Oyelowo in the drama filmDon't Let Go as Ashley, the latter of which earned her and Oyelowo positive reviews.[23][24]FilmSnobReviews wrote that the pair "bring an emotion-filled performance to the screen, capturing grief and confusion to near perfection."[25]

In 2020, Reid starred as Sydney Lanier, the daughter of James Lanier, in the science fiction horror filmThe Invisible Man, which was a commercial success and received critical acclaim.[26][27] In the same year, she was nominated for theBET YoungStars Award.[28] Reid appears in thesuperhero filmThe Suicide Squad, which was released in 2021.[29][30] The following year, she starred oppositeColson Baker,Kevin Bacon andTravis Fimmel in theensemble action featureOne Way.[31]

In 2023, Reid had leading roles in the mystery/thriller filmMissing, which was filmed over theCOVID-19 pandemic, and the supernatural horror filmThe Nun II.[32][33][34] Also in 2023, she portrayedRiley Abel in the HBO seriesThe Last of Us, appearing in the episode "Left Behind"./Film's Motamayor wrote that Reid "gives a memorable performance that ... sticks with you long after the credits roll",[35] andPush Square's Bayne said she effectively captured Riley's sense of "youthful pride".[36] For her performance, she won theBlack Reel Award for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Drama Series and thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.[37][38]

Reid was previously in a relationship with actorSayeed Shahidi.[39][40][41]

In the fall of 2021, Reid began attending theUniversity of Southern California, majoring indramatic arts and minoring inAfrican American studies.[42][43] She is aChristian.[44]
