Stoke Fleming is a village andcivil parish in theSouth Hams district ofDevon, England. It lies on theA379 road about one and a half miles south of the town ofDartmouth, at the north end ofStart Bay and within theSouth Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.[1] In 2001 the parish had a population of 1,012, compared to 708 in 1901,[2] reducing again to 803 at the2011 census[3] The parish is a major part of the Skerrieselectoral ward. The ward's total population at the same census was 1,927.[4] Stoke Fleming a primary school, library[5] and a football club.[citation needed]

History

The village is of ancient foundation, being recorded in theDomesday Book asStoc, and the personal namele Flemeng is first recorded in connection with the village in 1218.[6]

The parish church is dedicated toSaint Peter, it was recorded as having arector in 1272, was enlarged during the 14th century and was subject to a majorrestoration in 1871–2.[2]

Earmund of Stoke Fleming asaint ofAnglo-Saxon England, reputed to be buried here, was the localpatron saint[7] of the village, being recorded asvenerated in 1364AD[8] and 1419AD.[9]

George Parker Bidder, once known as "the Calculating Boy", is buried in its graveyard.[10] It was historically part of theColeridge hundred.[11]
