The ancientSthaneshwar Mahadev Temple, dedicated toShiva is situated inold Kurukshetra cityKurukshetra district ofHaryana, India. It was here that thePandavas along withKrishna are said to have prayed toShiva and to have received his blessings for victory in the battle ofMahabharata.[1][2] The ninthGuru, ShriTegh Bahadur stayed at a spot near the Sthaneshwar Tirtha that is marked by agurdwara just beside the temple.[citation needed]
The temple is dedicated toShiva, the presiding deity of the ancient city of Sthaneshwar presently known as Thanesar city or Kurukshetra city. Pushpabhuti, the founder of the Vardhana Empire ofThanesar named the capital of his kingdom after Sthaneshwar Shiva. The existing temple was constructed byRaghunath Rao Peshwa.[3]
