Stephen Gray (7 February 1967 – 19 September 2009) was a Scottish professionalfootballer who played as aright winger. Gray made 85 appearances in theScottish Football League forAberdeen andAirdrieonians between 1985 and 1993. Gray also representedScotland at under-21 international level.
Born inGlasgow,[2] Gray won theScottish Youth Cup withAberdeen in 1985,[3][4] and then broke into thefirst team managed byAlex Ferguson, winning the1985 Scottish League Cup Final.[2] He left Aberdeen in 1989 to join second-tierAirdrie for a fee of £70,000,[5] where he was part of the team managed byJimmy Bone which achieved promotion to the Premier Division in1991, but he dropped out of the senior game in 1993 to sign forHighland League teamHuntly.[2]
Gray died on 19 September 2009 inIrvine, aged 42.[2] After Gray's death, former teammateStewart McKimmie commented that Gray had perhaps lost his way after Ferguson left Aberdeen in 1986.[2]
