Steven Charles Bergwijn (born 8 October 1997) is a Dutch professionalfootballer who plays as aleft winger or aforward forSaudi Pro League clubAl-Ittihad.

Early life

Steven Charles Bergwijn[4] was born 8 October 1997 inAmsterdam to parents fromSuriname.[5]

Club career

Bergwijn started his career in the Ajax youth academy up to 2011, but due to a conflict with one of the trainers, chose to leave. He was immediately signed by PSV. Bergwijn made his first-team debut forJong PSV in the second division on 9 August 2014 againstAchilles '29.[4] He replacedElvio van Overbeek after 77 minutes in a 2–0 home win.[6]

He scored the third goal as PSV beat Ajax 3–0 to clinch the2017–18 Eredivisie title.[7]

Tottenham Hotspur

At the end of the January 2020 transfer window Bergwijn signed a five-year contract withTottenham Hotspur in a deal worth a reported £26.7 million.[8] He scored his first goal for the club in hisPremier League debut, a 2–0 victory againstManchester City, and was also named Man of the Match bySky Sports.[9] On 6 March 2020, Bergwijn suffered a sprain to his left ankle in the match againstBurnley which might have sidelined him for the rest of the season,[10] but due to the Premier League break caused byCOVID-19, Bergwijn had time to recover and was able to return to the starting eleven, scoring againstManchester United in Tottenham's first post-break match.[11]

On 19 January 2022, Bergwijn scored a brace againstLeicester City in dramatic fashion, scoring both goals in injury time to give Spurs a 3–2 victory.[12]

Ajax

On 8 July 2022, Bergwijn returned to the Netherlands, signing a five-year contract withAjax. The transfer fee paid to Tottenham Hotspur was of €31.25 million.[13] This was the most expensive transfer in the history of theEredivisie, breaking the record set when Ajax boughtSébastien Haller in 2021 (€22.5 million).[14] On 14 August 2022, he scored a hat-trick in a 6–1 win overGroningen.[15] On 8 August 2023 Bergwijn was announced by Ajax as their newcaptain replacing the recently departingDušan Tadic.

Al-Ittihad

On 2 September 2024, Bergwijn signed a three-year contract withAl-Ittihad.[16][17]

International career

Bergwijn earned his first full international call up whenRonald Koeman named him in theNetherlands squad in October 2018.[18] He made his debut as a starter on 13 October 2018 in a 3–02018–19 UEFA Nations League A victory overGermany.[19]

Bergwijn was named in the final Netherlands squad for the2022 FIFA World Cup.[20]

On 29 May 2024, Bergwijn was named in the Netherlands' squad forUEFA Euro 2024.[21]

On 3 September 2024, the day after Bergwijn's move to Saudi Arabia, Dutch manager Ronald Koeman said that Bergwijn would not be called up to represent the national team anymore, citing "lack of sporting ambition" as the main reason for his decision.[22]
