Steve Lillebuen is a Canadian author and journalist. He divides his time between Australia and Canada.

Background

Born inEdmonton,Alberta, Lillebuen graduated from theUniversity of Alberta with aBachelor of Arts degree[1][2] and later attendedMonash University, where he completed aPhD in journalism.[3] At the University of Alberta, he served as an editor and writer forThe Gateway, the campus newspaper.[4]

In 2004, Lillebuen founded theGateway Alumni Association (GAA), an official chapter of the University of Alberta's alumni association, and served as its first president.[4][5]

As of 2019, Lillebuen teaches investigative journalism atMacEwan University inEdmonton,Alberta.[6][7][8][9]

Career in Journalism

Lillebuen has been widely published across Canada and Australia, and has worked as a journalist at newswire agenciesThe Canadian Press andAustralian Associated Press.[1][10][11]

He also worked at theEdmonton Journal as a police reporter.[12][13] While at the newspaper, he covered homicides and major crimes acrossAlberta and northernBritish Columbia, including the case ofMark Twitchell.[14][15] The criminal investigation andfirst-degree murder trial drew substantial media attention[16] due to its connections toDexter Morgan,[17] a fictionalserial killer andbloodstain pattern analyst featured in theDexter television program and series of books.

TheMark Twitchell case and trial became the focus ofThe Devil's Cinema, Lillebuen's first book, after he left the newspaper.[1][13][18]

The book won the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Non-Fiction.[19][20][21][22] It was also shortlisted in Australia for the Ned Kelly Award.[23][24]

A film adaptation of the book was acquired byDavid Permut with Sam Hobkinson set to direct in April 2022.[25]
