Steven Aaron Golin (March 6, 1955 – April 21, 2019)[1] was an American film and televisionproducer and the founder and CEO ofAnonymous Content LLP, a multimedia development, production and talent management company and co-founder and CEO ofPropaganda Films.[2] Golin graduated from theTisch School of the Arts atNew York University in 1976[3] and attended theAFI Conservatory.[4] He wonBest Picture at the2016 Academy Awards forSpotlight.

Propaganda Films

Golin and partnerJoni Sighvatsson launched Propaganda Films, a talent management, advertising, and video production company, in 1986.[2] They built Propaganda into the largest music video and commercial production company in the world, winning moreMTV Video Awards and CannesPalme d'Or Awards than any other company and quickly became a home for the most sought-after young music video and commercial directors. One of its first discoveries wasDavid Fincher, then an unknown video director.[2] Not long afterward, a young filmmaker showed up with a reel containing aDonny Osmond video and a specCoke commercial.[2] Golin watched the clips and toldMichael Bay, "Nice to meet you. You're hired."[2] After seeing a couple of skateboard videos he liked, Golin broughtSpike Jonze into the fold. Other discoveries includedAntoine Fuqua,Gore Verbinski, andAlex Proyas.[2] Golin and Sighvatsson sold the company toPolyGram,[when?] but when PolyGram was sold toSeagram in 1998, Golin lost control of the company and exited in 1999.[2]

Anonymous Content

Golin's next company, Anonymous Content, located inCulver City,California, was launched in early 2000.[2] Golin has guided the company's commercial division to become one of the top commercial production entities in the industry, producing spots and campaigns forAudi,Citibank,Coca-Cola,Ford,Intel,Nike,Pepsi,United Airlines, and others. Its music video division, which earned Best New Artist Clip (Hard Rock category) at the 2000Billboard Music Video Awards forA Perfect Circle's "Judith" (2000),[5] directed byDavid Fincher,[6] has also produced projects forCypress Hill,Filter,Smashmouth,Third Eye Blind, andThe Wallflowers, among other artists. Under Golin's leadership, the company's management division has grown to represent more than 50 writers, directors, and actors. Fincher also worked with the company to produce "The Hire", a series of adverts forBMW, which were only available online.[7]

Golin has also produced a number of feature films and television shows, some of which were produced with Anonymous Content and others through Propaganda Films. These includeDavid Fincher'sThe Game (1997),Spike Jonze'sBeing John Malkovich (1999),Michel Gondry'sEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004),Alejandro González Iñárritu'sBabel (2006), andGavin Hood'sRendition (2007),Nic Pizzolatto'sTrue Detective (2014),Sam Esmail'sMr. Robot (2015) andTom McCarthy'sSpotlight (2015).

Golin receivedAcademy Award nominations forBest Picture for producingBabel,[8]The Revenant, andSpotlight, the latter of which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Personal life

Golin wasJewish and had two children, Ari and Anna.[9] He initially was a cancer survivor.[10] However, Golin died ofEwing's sarcoma on April 21, 2019, at the age of 64.[11][12]
