Stephen C. Tweedie is a Scottishsoftware developer who is known for his work on theLinux kernel, in particular his work on filesystems.[1]

After becoming involved with the development of theext2 filesystem working on performance issues, he led the development of theext3 filesystem which involved adding ajournaling layer (JBD) to the ext2 filesystem.[1] For his work on the journaling layer, he has been described by fellow Linux developerAndrew Morton as "a true artisan".[2]

Born inEdinburgh, Scotland in 1969, Tweedie studied computer science atChurchill College, Cambridge and theUniversity of Edinburgh,[3] where he did his thesis onContention and Achieved Performance in Multicomputer Wormhole Routing Networks.[4] After contributing to the Linux kernel in his spare time since the early nineties and working onVMS filesystem support forDEC for two years, Tweedie was employed by Linux distributorRed Hat where he continues to work on the Linux kernel.

Tweedie has published a number of papers on Linux, includingDesign and Implementation of the Second Extended Filesystem in 1994,[5]Journaling the Linux ext2fs Filesystem in 1998,[6] andPlanned Extensions to the Linux Ext2/Ext3 Filesystem in 2002.[7]

Tweedie is also a frequent speaker on the subject of Linux kernel development at technical conferences. Amongst others, he has given talks on Linux kernel development at the 1997 and 1998USENIX Annual Technical Conferences,[8][9] the 2000UKUUG conference in London,[10] and he gave the keynote speech at theOttawa Linux Symposium in 2002.[11][12]
