Stege Marsh, also known as theSouth Richmond Marshes,[1] is a tidal marshland wetlands area inRichmond, California in westernContra Costa County.[2]
The marsh is the delta at the mouth ofBaxter or Stege Creek, which drains from a watershed extending into theBerkeley Hills inEl Cerrito. The marsh is oppositeMeeker Slough from whereMeeker Slough Creek drains intoCampus Bay, which is a part of theRichmond Inner Harbor of theSan Francisco Bay.
The site was polluted by manufacturing activities at what are now theUC BerkeleyRichmond Field Station andCampus Bay, formerly aStauffer Chemical and most recently aZenecasulfuric acid manufacturing center. Restoration is underway.[2] The marsh is so polluted that theSan Francisco Bay Area Regional Water Quality Control Board named it a "toxic hot spot" and one of the "top 10 most polluted" sites in theBay Area in 1998.[3] The contamination includes dangerous levels of toxic chemicals and organic compounds such as arsenic, mercury, andPCBs.[3]
