Stefan Klos (born 16 August 1971) is a German former professionalfootballer who played as agoalkeeper.

His seventeen-year career was spent withBorussia Dortmund andRangers. He won 16 major trophies in total, including fourScottish Premier League titles and the1997 Champions League.

Born inDortmund, Klos arrived atBorussia Dortmund in the summer of 1990, from neighbouringTSC Eintracht Dortmund. He made hisBundesliga debut on 4 May 1991 at only 19, in a 2–2 home draw againstSG Wattenscheid 09.[2]

Klos became first choice in1991–92, relegatingWolfgang de Beer tothe bench.[3] He totalled 31 games for the campaign as his team finished runners-up, going on to win back-to-back national championships during his spell.[4][5]

As well as playing every match in1996–97 for the third-placed side, Klos added 11 inthat season'sUEFA Champions League as they won the tournament for the first time.[6] He left the club with 339 competitive appearances, and 114clean sheets.[7]

Rangers

On 24 December 1998, Klos signed with Scottish clubRangers on a contract that made him one of the highest-earning players in Europe.[8] He replacedLionel Charbonnier as starter and was nicknamed 'Der Goalie', a play onAndy Goram's nickname 'The Goalie'.[9][10] He won his firstScottish Premier League titlethat season.[11]

Rangers wonthe treble in2002–03, with Klos again the starter.[12][13][14][15] He did not concede a single goal in the league between 25 August and 28 September 2002.[16][17][18][19][20][21]

Klos was appointedteam captain in July 2004.[22] Six months later, he picked up a kneeligament injury in training,[23] missing the remainder ofthe season and being replaced byRonald Waterreus;[24] the Dutchman retained his place after he regained full fitness.[25]

Klos looked set to challenge new signingLionel Letizi afterPaul Le Guen's arrival at the start of2006–07, but he suffered a biking injury which gave long-term third choiceAllan McGregor the chance to play.[26] On 22 February 2007, he made his first appearance of the season for the first team againstHapoel Tel Aviv FC in theround of 32 of theUEFA Cup, after McGregor wassent off in a 4–0 home win.[27][28]

Klos leftIbrox Stadium at the end ofthe campaign after eight and a half years, having played 298 matches in all competitions.[29][30] He retired at the age of 36,[29] and subsequently settled in Switzerland.[31]

In 2009, Klos was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.[30]
