In thestateand territorial governments of the United States, 54 of the 56states and territories have theexecutive position oftreasurer.New York abolished the office ofNew York State Treasurer in 1926, in which the duties were transferred to theNew York State Comptroller.Texas abolished the position ofTexas State Treasurer in 1996, transferring the duties of that office to theTexas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

The state treasurer serves as the chief custodian of each state's treasury and as the state's head banker. Typically, they receive and deposit state monies, manages investments, and keeps track ofbudget surpluses anddeficits. The position has powers and responsibilities similar to those of theUnited States Secretary of the Treasury and theTreasurer of the United States, or thechief financial officer of acorporation.

In most states, the position is a statewide elected office, usually a constitutional office (that is, provided for in thestate constitution). In some states the position is appointed by thegovernor as a member of the governor'scabinet.
