Stara Pazova (Serbian Cyrillic:Стара Пазова,pronounced[stâːraːpâzɔv̞a];Slovak:Stará Pazova;Hungarian:Ópazova) is a small town located in theSrem District of the autonomous province ofVojvodina,Serbia. The town has a population of 18,522, while Stara Pazova municipality has 62,318 inhabitants (2022 census). The entrance into town fromInđija lies on45th parallel north, it is half-way between theNorth Pole and theequator.

Name

InSerbian, the town is known asStara Pazova (Стара Пазова), formerly alsoPazova (Пазова); inSlovak asStará Pazova; inGerman asAlt-Pasua,Alt-Pazua orPazua; and inHungarian asÓpazova.

History

During theOttoman administration (16th-18th century), Pazova was populated by ethnicSerbs and was part of the OttomanSanjak of Syrmia. In 1718, the town became part of theHabsburg monarchy. In the 18th century (after 1760)LutheranSlovaks settled in Pazova, and in 1791Germans arrived here as well. The Germans lived in a separate settlement known asNova Pazova ("New Pazova"), thus the old settlement was named Stara Pazova ("Old Pazova"). Until the second half of the 20th century, Slovaks were the largest ethnic group in the town of Stara Pazova, while the largest ethnic group in the surrounding municipality were Serbs.

For most part of the Habsburg rule, Stara Pazova was part of the HabsburgMilitary Frontier (abolished in 1882), while in 1848–1849 it was part ofSerbian Vojvodina. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Stara Pazova was a district centre in theSyrmia County (part of theKingdom of Croatia-Slavonia,Kingdom of Hungary andAustria-Hungary). According to the 1910 census, the population of the Stara Pazova municipality numbered 46,430 inhabitants, of whom 24,262 spokeSerbian, 9,348German, 5,779Slovak, and 5,670Croatian.[1] The town itself had a Slovak majority in 1910.

After 1918, the town was part of theKingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and subsequent South Slavic states.
