TheStar Herald, or theScottsbluff Star Herald, is a newspaper serving the city ofScottsbluff and surrounding areas inNebraska, United States. The paper is published on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.[2][3]
TheStar Herald had its beginning in two separate newspapers. In 1900, Ernest Moon established theScottsbluff Herald in Scottsbluff. In 1906 theMitchell Star was founded by P. J. Barron in nearbyMitchell. In 1907 theStar's publication was moved to Scottsbluff and the paper was renamed theScottsbluff Star.[4] In 1912,Asa B. Wood, owner of theGering Courier, and Harry J. Wisner purchased both theHerald andStar and consolidated them into a single newspaper under the title of theStar-Herald. The paper's main competitor was theScottsbluff Republican.
The Wood family continued to own a half stake in the newspaper until 1966.[4] In November 1968 the heirs of Harry Wisner sold their stock in the newspaper to the Seacrest Family's Western Publishing Co. The Seacrest family also owned theLincoln Journal andNorth Platte Telegraph.[5] The Western Publishing Co., including theStar-Herald, was acquired by theOmaha World-Herald Company in February 2000.[6][7][8] The Omaha World-Herald Company was in turn purchased byBerkshire Hathaway in 2011.[9]
TheStar Herald was part of Berkshire Hathaway's subsidiary BH Media Group, although starting in 2018 it was managed byLee Enterprises.[10] In January 2020 it was announced that Lee Enterprises was purchasing Berkshire Hathaway's newspaper holdings.[11][12]
On June 13, 2023, theStar Herald reduced its number of print days a week from six (formerly excluding Monday) to three. The newspaper will also transition from being delivered by a traditional newspaper delivery carrier to mail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service. Production of the print edition would be moving to Rapid City, South Dakota.[13][3]
The paper shared resources with two other nearby newspapers, theGering Courier and theHemingford Ledger, both also owned by Lee Enterprises, until the two ceased in December 2024.[14][15]
The Star-Herald, one of Nebraska's most honored daily newspapers, has a circulation of more than 16,000 and publishes every day of the week but Monday.
