This article is about the mountain range in Yakutia. Not to be confused with theStanovoy Highlands in the Transbaikal area.

TheStanovoy Range (Russian:Станово́й хребе́т,Stanovoy khrebet;Yakut:Сир кура) is amountain range located in theSakha Republic andAmur Oblast,Far Eastern Federal District. It is also known asSükebayatur andSükhbaatar inMongolian, or theStanovoy Mountains orOuter Khingan Range in English. The range was first studied and scientifically described by Russian researcherAlexander von Middendorff.[2]

History

The range formed the border between Russia and China from 1689 (Treaty of Nerchinsk) to 1858 (Treaty of Aigun).

Etymology

TheEvenks grouped theDzhugdzhur, Stanovoy, andYablonoi ranges under the name "Dzhugdzhur". In Evenk folklore this mountain system is known as the "backbone of the Earth".[3][4]

Geography

The range runs roughly from west to east at the southern end of theSakha Republic and the northern limit ofAmur Oblast for roughly 700 kilometers (430 mi). It is bound by theOlyokma River in the west (which separates it from theStanovoy Highlands to the west) and theUchur River in the east (which separates it from theDzhugdzhur Range inKhabarovsk Krai to the east).[5] TheAldan Highlands are located to the north of the eastern part of the range and theOlyokma-Chara Plateau to the northwest.[6] TheYankanTukuringraSoktakhanDzhagdy group of mountain ranges rise to the south and theMaya Range to the southeast.

The highest point of the range isSkalisty Golets, a‘’golets’’-type mountain with a bald peak, at 2,412 meters (7,913 ft).[7]

Hydrography

The Stanovoy Range separates the watershed of theArctic Ocean (basin of theLena) from that of thePacific Ocean (Amur basin). The range has many glaciers, which are among the main sources of the Lena. RiversMaya andTimpton have their sources in the range. TheZeya has its sources in theToko-Stanovik subrange located at the eastern end.[8]
