
St John Street is a historic street located inClerkenwell,Islington, northLondon, England.[1][2]
The street runs fromSmithfield Market and Charterhouse Street in the south to the junction ofCity Road andPentonville Road (nearUpper Street) in the north, close to theAngel tube station. It is the first section of the original route of theGreat North Road.
In 1511, theKnights Hospitaller founded ahermitage on the corner of St John Street andGoswell Road.[3]
TheRed Bull Theatre was located on the street between 1604 and 1666, when it was destroyed in theGreat Fire of London.[4]James Burnett, Lord Monboddo (1714–1799) lived at 13 St John Street.[5] He held "learned suppers" at his house, with guests includingJames Boswell,Robert Burns andSamuel Johnson. Nowadays there are many office buildings, restaurants, and bars in the street.
