TheSt. Nicholas of Myra Church is anAmerican Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese (ACROD) church dedicated toSaint Nicholas, located at 288East 10th Street, on the corner ofAvenue A in theEast Village neighborhood ofManhattan,New York City, across fromTompkins Square Park.
The church was built in 1883 as the Memorial Chapel ofSt. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, designed inGothic Revival style byJames Renwick Jr. – who also designedGrace Church andSt. Patrick's Cathedral – andW. H. Russell.[1] The chapel was a gift ofRutherfurd Stuyvesant, a descendant of the Dutch governorPeter Stuyvesant, in memory of his wife.[2]
The church later became the Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church, and then, in 1925, the ACROD rented it for use as the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra, and bought it outright in 1937. The church draws its parishioners from the tri-state area:New York,New Jersey andConnecticut.[3]
