2002–2009: Debut and breakthrough

[edit]

Looking to step into an acting career after beginning as a model, Srikanth was coached acting skills by then-assistant directors such asVetrimaaran andMysskin in the early 2000s.[16] Srikanth was selected to play the lead role inKathir'sKadhal Virus (2002) and spent a year preparing for the film, before being replaced by fellow newcomerRichard. He was then considered to make his acting debut throughJeeva's12B, but the role went to another newcomerShaam.[16] Further potential projects directed byBharathiraja andK. Balachander also did not work out, before he was cast bySasi inRoja Kootam (2002), after the original lead actor had opted out.[17] After the film's success, he became popularly known asRoja Kootam Srikanth for a while.[18]

Srikanth then featured in another successful ventureApril Madhathil (2002) alongsideSneha followed byManasellam (2003). He won theTamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his role inParthiban Kanavu (2003) opposite Sneha, directed byKaru Pazhaniappan. Srikanth's straight Telugu film wasRasool Ellore's directorial debutOkariki Okaru under the stage name of Sriram to avoid confusion with established starMeka Srikanth. The film received positive reviews upon release with one critic noting that "He did a sensible portrayal of the role".[19] His first release of 2004 wasVarnajalam, followed byBose, in which he was paired with Sneha for the third time afterApril Maadhathil andParthiban Kanavu.Kana Kandaen (2005) directed byK. Srikanth and Prithviraj gave a good performance also.[20][21] The film was followed byOru Naal Oru Kanavu (2005) andBambara Kannaley (2005). In 2006, he acted in the filmMercury Pookkal,[22] andUyir.Behindwoods wrote: "Sri has come up with an excellent performance of a man lost in this juggernaut of emotions."[23] TSV Hari at Rediff.com responded negatively toKizhakku Kadarkarai Salai, noting a thin script and "meaningless songs".[24] This was the third film and last collaboration between the directorS. S. Stanley and Srikanth afterApril Maadhathil andMercury Pookkal. His next film wasAadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule, a Telugu film directed by Tamil directorSelvaraghavan. Srikanth play the second lead role after Telugu actorVenkatesh. This was followed byVallamai Tharayo (2008),Poo (2008) andIndira Vizha (2009).[25]
