TheSquare Maréchal Montgomery (French,pronounced[skwaʁma.ʁe.ʃalmɔ̃.ɡɔm.ʁi]) orMaarschalk Montgomeryplein (Dutch, pronounced[ˈmaːrsxɑlkˈmɔntɡɔmərɪˌplɛin]), usually shortened to theSquare Montgomery, orMontgomery by locals, is a major intersection in theWoluwe-Saint-Pierre municipality ofBrussels, Belgium. It is named in honour of Field MarshalBernard Montgomery, a seniorBritish Armyofficer who served in theFirst World War, theIrish War of Independence and theSecond World War.[1] It is situated on the intersection of theAvenue de Tervueren/Tervurenlaan, theBoulevard Brand Whitlock/Brand Whitlocklaan and theBoulevard Saint-Michel/Sint-Michielslaan.
Below the square,Montgomery metro station serves as the first station on the eastern branch ofline 1 of theBrussels Metro. The station is also a stop for trams7, 25,39 and44, while tram 81 and variousBrussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB/MIVB) bus services stop at surface level.
At surface level, the traffic intersection takes the form of a multi-lane roundabout. Traffic not turning is routed through two tunnels; the Tervuren Tunnel takes vehicles travelling on theAvenue de Tervueren/Tervurenlaan under the junction, while traffic on theGreater Ring (from theBoulevard Brand Whitlock/Brand Whitlocklaan and theBoulevard Saint-Michel/Sint-Michielslaan) is routed away from the intersection via the Montgomery Tunnel.
The centre of the roundabout is occupied by a large fountain, while a statue of Montgomery stands on the Avenue de Tervueren facing it.[1]
