Splashdown is a waterracing video game developed byRainbow Studios and published byInfogrames originally for thePlayStation 2 and was later ported to theXbox . It was released under theAtari brand name.
It received a sequel,Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild , in 2003, and was published by Rainbow Studios' new ownerTHQ .
Splashdown is quite similar toNintendo 'sWave Race series andSony Computer Entertainment America 'sJet Moto franchise. Players gain control of apersonal water craft as they race against each other on various courses. Players must pass through correct sides ofbuoys in eachracetrack , or the personal water craft may stall as a penalty.
Splashdown received "generally favorable reviews" on both platforms according to thereview aggregation websiteMetacritic .[ 4] [ 5] In Japan,Famitsu gave it a score of 28 out of 40 for PlayStation 2 version.[ 6] It was nominated forGameSpot ' s 2001 "Best In-Game Water" prize amongconsole games , which went toWave Race: Blue Storm .[ 7] The 2002 Xbox version was a runner-up forGameSpot ' s annual "Best Driving Game on Xbox" award.[ 8]
During the5th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards ,Splashdown received a nomination for the "Console Racing " award by theAcademy of Interactive Arts & Sciences .[ 9]
