Interest and writing delay

[edit]

Sony Pictures was reported in August 2019 to be developing a fourthMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)Spider-Man film alongside the third,Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021),[11] after they co-producedSpider-Man: Homecoming (2017) andSpider-Man: Far From Home (2019) withMarvel Studios and its presidentKevin Feige. Later that month, Sony said it would be makingNo Way Home without Marvel Studios and Feige after negotiations to update the production deal between the two companies failed.[12] Following a negative fan reaction, Sony and Marvel's parent companyDisney returned to negotiations and announced a new agreement at the end of September, which allowed Marvel Studios and Feige to produceNo Way Home for Sony with producerAmy Pascal.[13] In February 2021, starTom Holland saidNo Way Home was the final film in his contract with Sony and Marvel but he hoped to continue playingPeter Parker / Spider-Man in the future.[14][15]Zendaya, who portraysMichelle "MJ" Jones-Watson in the MCU, said in July that she did not know if another MCUSpider-Man film would be made.[16] That October, Holland saidNo Way Home was being treated as the end of a franchise that began withHomecoming. He said any further MCUSpider-Man films would differ from the first trilogy and feature a tonal change.[17]

Holland said in November 2021 that he was unsure if he should continue makingSpider-Man films and felt he would have done something wrong if he was still portraying the character in his thirties. He expressed interest in a film focusing on theMiles Morales version ofSpider-Man instead of Parker. Despite this, Pascal hoped to continue working with Holland on futureSpider-Man films,[18] and said work on the first film in a new trilogy was about to begin.[19]The Hollywood Reporter reported that Sony did not yet have official plans for further MCUSpider-Man films but the studio hoped to continue its collaboration with Marvel Studios.[20] Holland said he did not know about plans for futureSpider-Man films, but there were some "very, very exciting things" being discussed and he felt the franchise had a bright future.[21] The next month, he added that he had achieved what he wanted with the character and was ready to say goodbye to the role if he did not end up starring in another film, but he would be saddened to leave the franchise.[22] Pascal expressed her hope that the partnership between Sony and Disney would last forever, and Feige promised that it would not break down again as it did during the development ofNo Way Home. He said Holland's Parker would return in another MCU film at some point, and confirmed that he had begun discussing the story for the nextSpider-Man film with Pascal, Sony, and Disney.[23] This would continue from Parker's "momentous decision" at the end ofNo Way Home to make everyone forget who he is.[24][25]

By April 2022, when series directorJon Watts exited as director of Marvel Studios'Fantastic Four film (2025), Sony was expecting Watts to return for the nextSpider-Man film.[26] A month later, Sony Pictures CEO and chairmanTom Rothman confirmed that he hoped the "whole group" from the previous films would return, including Watts, Holland, and Zendaya.[27] Feige said in February 2023 that they had a story with "big ideas" and writers had begun work on it,[28] but this was put on hold in May because of the2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Pascal said work would resume on the film after the strike concluded.[29] Holland said he had been involved in meetings about the film, and these had also been put on hold because of the writers' strike.[30] He was happy with the creative reasoning that had been proposed for why a fourth film should be made, but was apprehensive about the stigma surrounding fourth films in franchises and felt they had "hit a home run with our first franchise and there's a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton" to another actor.[31]

Restarting active work

[edit]

The writers' strike ended in late September 2023,[32] and Holland confirmed in November that discussions about the film had restarted. He stated that he would only return for a fourth film if it would "do justice to the character".[33] In his meetings with the studios, Holland presented "a vibe" of what fans had been saying on the internet sinceNo Way Home's release, believing it was important to understand what fans were interested in since "we make these movies for [the fans]".[34][35] JournalistJeff Sneider reported in early 2024 that Marvel Studios was consideringDrew Goddard andJustin Lin to direct;[36][37] thatChris McKenna andErik Sommers had returned from the prior threeSpider-Man films to write the script; that Holland and Zendaya were both expected to return;[36] and that filming was set to begin in September or October of that year, delaying filming for thethird season ofEuphoria (2026) to accommodate Zendaya's schedule.[37]Variety reported in March that the script was still being worked on and there was no director or filming date set.[38] The next month, Holland said they were giving the writers the time that they needed to work on the script following the strike. He added that he would "always want to doSpider-Man films" and owed his career to the franchise, but reiterated that he wanted to make sure the next film was made the right way to preserve the legacy of the previous trilogy. Holland was able to have more input on the fourth film's story because he was involved in the creative process much earlier than he was for the previousSpider-Man films.[39] Feige said in July that a draft of the script was being submitted "relatively soon",[40] and Watts may not be available to direct due to his busy schedule with other projects.[41] Watts ultimately chose not to direct the film.[42]

After further work on the script, the studios began meeting with directors.Destin Daniel Cretton was the top choice to direct by September 2024 when he was in early talks.[43][44] He directed the filmShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) for Marvel Studios and signed an overall deal with them in December 2021 that included directing a sequel to that film and developing theDisney+ seriesWonder Man (2025). Cretton was also hired to direct the MCUcrossover filmAvengers: The Kang Dynasty in July 2022,[45] but stepped down in November 2023 due to schedule delays.[46] That film was subsequently reworked intoAvengers: Doomsday (2026).[47] The fourthSpider-Man film was said to be the priority for Marvel Studios over a sequel toShang-Chi.[48] Also in September 2024, McKenna and Sommers were confirmed to be writing the film, Holland and Zendaya were reportedly in talks to return, and filming was expected to begin in early 2025.[43][44] Sneider reported a planned release date in 2026 and questioned the extent of Zendaya's role compared to the previousSpider-Man films due to her busy schedule in 2025 filmingEuphoria's third season and the filmDune: Part Three (2026).[49] In October, Holland said he was excited after reading a draft of the script with Zendaya, though he felt it still needed work. He said one of the challenges was fitting into the overall plan for the MCU and described the schedule needed for this as "a tall order but definitely achievable with the fantastic people we have working on it now".[50] He said filming would begin in mid-2025,[51] working around his commitments toDoomsday and the filmThe Odyssey (2026). Zendaya no longer needed to work around the filming ofDune: Part Three, which had been delayed to early 2026.[52] Soon after Holland's comments, he and Cretton were confirmed to have signed on for the fourthSpider-Man film. It was scheduled for release on July 24, 2026.[1]

By November 2024, it was again unclear if Zendaya would reprise her role after she joined Holland inThe Odyssey.[53] Sneider reported that filming was not expected to begin until late 2025 or early 2026 and there was potential for the release date to be delayed until 2027 as a result, in part because Sony did not plan to release it the same year as the animated filmSpider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which was expected to be ready for a 2026 release at that point;[54][55]Beyond the Spider-Verse was later scheduled for release in 2027.[56] In December, Sneider further reported that Zendaya's role had been "severely reduced" due to her schedule, with filming set to take place from June to October 2025 between the filming schedules forEuphoria's third season andDune: Part Three. He also reported thatCharlie Cox was slated to reprise his role asMatt Murdock / Daredevil fromNo Way Home and other MCU media; aliensymbiotes were included in the script; a new group of Parker's classmates would be introduced; andSacha Baron Cohen was expected to appear asMephisto, reprising his role from theseries finale of the Disney+ miniseriesIronheart (2025).[10]

Pre-production

[edit]

In February 2025, filming was confirmed to be beginning in mid-2025 inLondon,[57] and the release date was pushed back a week to July 31, 2026, to distance it from the release ofThe Odyssey earlier that month.Variety reported that it was still unclear whether Zendaya would be returning for the film, whileDeadline Hollywood reported that she would but her deal had not been finalized.[58][59]Sadie Sink was cast in a significant role in March, following rumors that she could portray theX-Men memberJean Grey in the MCU.[4] At Sony'sCinemaCon panel at the end of the month, Holland and Cretton announced the title asSpider-Man: Brand New Day, derived from the 2008 comic book storyline "Brand New Day". Holland said the title was appropriate because the film was a "fresh start" following the ending ofNo Way Home,[60] and later elaborated that it was a "rebirth... something completely new" which felt to him like "the first movie in the next chapter" rather than the fourth installment of a franchise.[61] Cretton also described the film as the beginning of a new chapter for Spider-Man and said it would feature a tonal shift from the previous trilogy. He and the creative team were excited to take the franchise in a new direction.[62] Zendaya andJacob Batalon were expected to return, with Batalon reprising his MCU role asNed Leeds,[60][5] while Sneider reported that the film would take place concurrently with the events ofDoomsday and he did not expect Holland to appear in the latter as a result.[63]Liza Colón-Zayas joined the cast in May.[5]

Zendaya and Batalon were confirmed to be returning in June 2025, but the extent of their roles was unclear.[3] Filming was set to begin that August,[64][65] andJon Bernthal was revealed to be reprising his MCU role ofFrank Castle / Punisher in the film. Borys Kit ofThe Hollywood Reporter said the addition of Bernthal indicated thatBrand New Day could have a more grounded story due to the Punisher's characterization and background, and questioned how his violent nature would translate into the family-friendlySpider-Man property.[3] Feige confirmed Bernthal's role a month later.[6] He said the ending ofNo Way Home was a promise to audiences that they would see Holland as a "proper Spider-Man" for the first time, with the character on his own and fighting street-level crime inNew York City rather than dealing with "world-ending events". Because of this, Marvel wanted to include other street-level heroes in the film that Holland's Spider-Man had not interacted with before, such as the Punisher. Feige noted that the latter was introduced in a Spider-Man comic, specificallyThe Amazing Spider-Man vol. 1#129 (1974). He said Cretton had eight or nine comic book covers on the art department wall which he was planning to recreate in the film, seemingly including the cover ofThe Amazing Spider-Man #129.[2] The filmmakers were in constant discussions with the creative team behind the Disney+ seriesDaredevil: Born Again (2025–present), to ensure events line up for their shared characters and "impacts are felt" between the two.Brad Winderbaum, the head ofMarvel Television, said the tones of each project were different but they still wanted to highlight that they exist in the same world.[66] Bernthal was set to film his scenes forBrand New Dayback-to-back with theuntitled Punisher television special (2026), starting after the latter finished filming in August. He said it was important to himself, Holland, and Cretton that the film's portrayal of the Punisher feel like the same character that is seen in the special.[67]

Following rumors thatMark Ruffalo would be reprising his MCU role asBruce Banner / Hulk in the film, his casting was confirmed with the start of filming in August 2025. Aaron Couch and Borys Kit ofThe Hollywood Reporter said Ruffalo's role in the film had only "firmed up" as the script came together in the lead-up to filming. They noted that the previous MCUSpider-Man films each featured a major MCU co-star—Robert Downey Jr. asTony Stark / Iron Man inHomecoming,Samuel L. Jackson asNick Fury inFar From Home, andBenedict Cumberbatch as Dr.Stephen Strange inNo Way Home—as part of Sony and Marvel Studios' special agreement, and compared this to theMarvel Team-Up comic books which feature Spider-Man teaming-up with different heroes. They feltBrand New Day was "stacking the deck" by featuring both Bernthal and Ruffalo. The latter made acameo appearance inShang-Chi for Cretton.[7][68] Holland previously expressed interest in an MCU team-up with Spider-Man and the Hulk, enjoying an image from the comics of the pair together and believing they should have a "big brother-little brother" dynamic.[69] Also in August,Michael Mando was set to reprise his role asMac Gargan / Scorpion fromHomecoming, following up on the tease of more story for the character in that film'smid-credits scene.[7][68]

Costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays returned fromNo Way Home and other MCU films,[70] and production designer Charles Wood also returned from previous MCU media.[71] Holland was involved in developing the film'sSpider-Man suit, focusing on the story reasons for why it looks the way that it does.[34] He said it was constructed in a completely different way from the Spider-Man costumes he wore previously which made it comfier and more flexible.[61] The new suit is similar in design to the one that was introduced at the end ofNo Way Home, which was made by Holland's Parker following his interactions withTobey Maguire'sPeter Parker / Spider-Man andAndrew Garfield'sPeter Parker / Spider-Man in that film.No Way Home's script explains that Holland's Parker took inspiration from Maguire and Garfield's suits when designing his own.[72] Holland liked the idea of Parker "trying to be his big brothers, that he looks up to them and sees little details on their suits that he thinks are really cool", especially now that he is no longer connected to theAvengers and is making his own suit.[61]

Filming

Principal photography began on August 3, 2025, inGlasgow, Scotland, under theworking titleBlue Oasis,[73][74] withBrett Pawlak returning as cinematographer from many of Cretton's previous films.[75] TheJackie Chan Stunt Team coordinated the fight sequences,[76] returning fromShang-Chi.[77] Filming was previously expected to begin in early 2025,[44] but was adjusted to work around Holland's other commitments,[52] including filming forThe Odyssey, which took place first.[4] Production was scheduled for around two weeks throughoutGlasgow city centre, includingMerchant City,George Square, andTrongate, for scenes set in New York City,[65][78] and one of the film's actionset pieces. Holland was excited to start principal photography withlocation shooting, returning to the feel of makingHomecoming, after production onNo Way Home was restricted to soundstages due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[79] He was glad that fans could experience the start of filming with the cast and crew.[80] Set photos from Glasgow showed armored vehicles with a red demon logo on them. Bradley Russell ofTotal Film compared these logos to the symbol for theInner Demons gang, who are led byMister Negative in the comics, and speculated that Mister Negative could be appearing in the film.[81] Paul Trainer atGlasgow World reported that the Glasgow set was using a reference bust in the shape of a rhinoceros head, similar to the design for the comic book characterRhino.[82]

Filming took place atBrookwood Cemetery inSurrey, England, on August 7, 2025.[83] Around then, filming in Glasgow was extended until August 18,[84] for the shooting of a commercial.[85]Tramell Tillman joined the cast at the end of August.[8] Soundstage work forBrand New Day took place atPinewood Studios inBuckinghamshire, England, for most of September.[64][86] At the start of the month, Ruffalo said he was "still waiting to hear" about his role in the film and stated that he had not seen a script for it.[87] In early-to-mid September, filming took place atBattersea Park in London.[88][89] On September 19, Holland suffered a mildconcussion while filming a stunt on the Pinewood set.[90][86] Filming at Pinewood was subsequently paused until September 29 while Holland recovered, because the production determined that they could not shoot around his scenes. This was not expected to impact the film's release date.[86] At that time,Marvin Jones III was revealed to be portrayingLonnie Lincoln / Tombstone, after previously voicing another version of the character in Sony's animated filmSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).[9] Filming also took place then atFanum House inBasingstoke, England, with one of Holland's stunt doubles.[91] Filming at Basingstoke continued in early October, with Holland joining the filming there,[92] along with Mando.[93] Later that month, Holland, Sink, and Ruffalo were seen filming atSenate House in London,[94][95][96] while Cox denied his involvement in the film.[97] In early November, filming took place atRavenscourt Park in London.[98] Throughout November, filming took place atHM Prison Dorchester inDorchester, England.[99][100] Cretton announced on December 19 that filming hadwrapped,[101] and said directing the film was "one of the roles of a lifetime" for him.[62]

Post-production

[edit]

In January 2026, Justin Kroll fromDeadline Hollywood reported that Feige had been solely focused onthe production ofDoomsday and its sequelAvengers: Secret Wars (2027) for the last year, and had let Pascal handle much of the production forBrand New Day.[102]

Music

[edit]

Michael Giacchino was confirmed in December 2025 to be returning as composer from the previous MCUSpider-Man films.[103]

Marketing

[edit]

Cretton discussed the film at Sony's CinemaCon panel in March 2025, where Holland appeared via a video message to announce the title.[60] Commentators noted the appropriateness of the title considering the "Brand New Day" comic book storyline explores a reset of Spider-Man's character and story following the events of the 2007–08 "One More Day" storyline, similar to the reset for the MCU's Peter Parker at the end ofNo Way Home. There was also speculation about what impact the events ofDoomsday would have on the film.[104][105][106] Diego Peralta atComicBook.com questioned whether it would adapt specific elements from the comic storylines, such as having Parker make a deal with Mephisto to resurrect his auntMay Parker following her death inNo Way Home, or if the title was just a reference to Parker's new life.[105] Kevin Erdmann ofScreen Rant said the "One More Day" and "Brand New Day" storylines were controversial with readers, in part because they reverted Spider-Man's character growth and relationships. He felt the film could follow a similar storyline without making the same mistake.[106]

On August 1, 2025—known as "Spider-Man Day"—Sony released a nine-second teaser of the film's new Spider-Man costume. It has comics-accurate red and blue colors, raised webbing, and the same faint hexagonal webbing design on the fabric from Holland's previous suits.[107][108][109] Michael McWhertor atPolygon likened the raised webbing to the suits worn by Maguire and said the fabric was "glittery and textured", a contrast to Holland's prior high-tech suits.[108]Gizmodo's James Whitbrook said the new costume retained some of the "metallic shiny blue" from the suit that was introduced at the end ofNo Way Home.[109] The next day, a twenty-second teaser was released with a full look at Holland in costume. Justin Carter, also atGizmodo, said the biggest change other than the raised webbing was the spider logo on the chest, which is bigger than the one on Holland's previous costumes. Carter also noted the use of Giacchino's MCU Spider-Man theme in the teaser.[110] Jordan Moreau atVariety said the full costume was closer to the comics than Holland's previous costumes,[111] while McKinley Franklin ofThe Hollywood Reporter said it resembled the suits worn by Maguire and Garfield in previous films.[112] On August 10, Sony released a behind-the-scenes video recapping the first day of filming. Jack Dunn, also ofVariety, felt Sony and Marvel had been generous with the amount of looks at the film they had released thus far.[80]

Release

[edit]

Theatrical

[edit]

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released bySony Pictures Releasing in the United States on July 31, 2026.[60] It was previously scheduled for release on July 24 of that year, but was pushed back a week so it would be released two weeks afterThe Odyssey instead of one, avoiding contention for the majority ofIMAX screens which were expected to go toThe Odyssey for around two weeks.[58][59] Disney had intended to release an unspecified Marvel Studios film on that initial July date, but removed this from their release schedule in August 2024, which allowed Sony to schedule the fourthSpider-Man film then.[113] It will be part ofPhase Six of the MCU.[114]

Home media

[edit]

In April 2021, Sony signed deals withNetflix andDisney for the rights to their 2022 to 2026 film slate, following the films' theatrical and home media windows.[115][116] Netflix signed for exclusive "pay 1 window" streaming rights, which is typically an 18-month window and included futureSpider-Man films followingSpider-Man: No Way Home.[115] Disney signed for "pay 2 window" rights for the films, which would be streamed on Disney+ andHulu as well as broadcast on Disney's linear television networks.[116][117] In January 2026, Sony and Netflix announced a new agreement giving Netflix "pay 1 window" rights globally, an increase from just the United States, Germany, and southeast Asia in the previous deal. The new agreement would begin later in 2026 as territory rights become available, before being fully in effect in early 2029.[118]
