TheSpanish Catholic Movement (Spanish:Movimiento Católico Español,MCE) is a minorintegralist andnationalistpolitical party inSpain. The party has been led by José Luis Corral, a former member ofNew Force (FN), since its foundation.[7]
It was founded in 1982 as a splinter party of New Force, then led byBlas Piñar.[8] The party was born out of dissatisfied factions of the former, after Corral, alongside other members, left the party due to internal issues and discussions with the leadership.[9] The MCE gained notoriety in the 1980s, during the years following theSpanish transition to democracy. Most of its members weremilitant and were known for their street activity.[10] During its political history, the organization has joined multiple coalitions, such asCoalición de Unidad Nacional in 1986, theAlianza por la Unidad Nacional in 1996, andLa España en Marcha in 2014, where it currently remains.[11]
The MCE has as fundamental principlesCatholicconfesionalism, the defense ofSpain and theSpanish tradition, andnational syndicalism.[10] At the same time, it opposesliberalism, communism, andparliamentarism, as well asabortion,same-sex marriage, feminism, andracism.[8] The organization upholds the legacy of bothJosé Antonio Primo de Rivera andFrancisco Franco, and has participated in the manifestations of20-N, the anniversary of their deaths.[1] Although supportive ofmonarchism, the MCE opposes theHouse of Bourbon.[8]
MCE was founded in 1982 as a splinter group fromFuerza Nueva, led by José Luis Corral. In theSpanish general elections of 1982, the party received 996 votes, less than 1% of the total. In the following years, the MCE organized masses, tributes to theBlue Division veterans and to the "fallen forSpain", as well as numerous rallies againstabortion. The party has its ideological roots inSpanish Action andSpanish Renovation,Social Catholic,Integralist, andTraditionalist organizations during theSpanish Civil War. In the last 10 years, the party has also organized acts againsthomosexuals[12][13] orCatalan separatism.[14]
