Selkup is the group oflanguages of theSelkups, belonging to theSamoyedic group of theUralic language family. It is spoken by some 600 people (2022 est.) in the region between theOb andYenisei Rivers (inSiberia). The language nameSelkup comes from theRussianселькуп, based on the native name used in the Taz dialect,шӧльӄумыт әты (šöľqumyt ətylit.'forest-man language'). Differentdialects use different native names.

Dialects

[edit]

Selkup is fractured in an extensivedialect continuum whose ends are no longermutually intelligible. The three main varieties are theTaz (Northern) dialect (тазовский диалект,tazovsky dialekt), which became the basis of the Selkupwritten language in the 1930s,Tym (Central) dialect (тымский диалект,tymsky dialekt), andKet dialect (кетский диалект,ketsky dialekt). It is not related to theKet language.

Some have proposed to split Selkup into two different languages, termedNorthern Selkup andSouthern Selkup.[4][5] According to theEndangered Languages Project, the differences between dialects are "comparable to those between, for instance, Ket, Yug, and Pumpokol".[6][7][8]
