TheSouthern Railways (SR) (Ukrainian:Південна залізниця,Russian:Южная железная дорога) is a composing part ofUkraine'sUkrzaliznytsia railroad company and is headquartered inKharkiv. Southern Railways's route map covers all railroads of theKharkiv,Poltava and some railroads in otheroblasts (regions) as well.
As of 2008, the Southern Railways operate 3,000 kilometres (1,864 mi) of track. The Southern Railways company contributes a large role as a transit railway in the routes ofRussia-Crimea andRussia-Caucasus.
This regional railways was formed in 1907 soon after a merge of theKursk-Kharkiv-Sevastopol railways and the Kharkiv-Mykolaiv railways. The company traces its history to the Kursk-Kharkiv-Azov railways that was established in 1869.[citation needed]
In March 2024, railway stations of Southern Railways were being renamed to comply withderussification anddecommunizationlaws.[1] In February 2025, the Commission of theUkrainian Institute of National Memory Noted that "Southwestern" and "Southern Railways" names are propaganda for Russian imperial policy and violatethe law.[2][3]
