South Yaamba is a rurallocality in theRockhampton Region,Queensland, Australia.[3] In the2021 census, South Yaamba had a population of 79 people.[2]
The locality is bounded by theFitzroy River to the north, north-east, and east.[4]
Despite having the same name, the town of South Yaamba is on the other side of the river in the locality ofEtna Creek.[5]
Calmorin is a neighbourhood in the north-west of the locality (23°09′00″S150°19′00″E / 23.15°S 150.3166°E /-23.15; 150.3166 (Calmorin (neighbourhood))).[6]
The land use is mostlygrazing on native vegetation with some crop-growing.[4]
The locality takes its name from the town ofYaamba, which in turn took its name from the parish, which took its name from the pastoral run, named in 1860s by the pastoralistPeter Fitzallan MacDonald. It is believed to be an Aboriginal word meaningmain camping ground.[3]
