South Swedish dialects (Swedish:sydsvenska mål) is one of the maindialect groups ofSwedish. It includes the closely related dialects spoken in the formerly Danish but since 1658 Swedish traditional provinces ofScania (seeScanian dialects),Blekinge and southernHalland, as well as in the southern parts ofSmåland, which are the remains of an olddialect continuum between Danish and Swedish.[1][2] Thephonology of South Swedish dialects is influenced by Danish. Examples are the use of auvular trills (rather thanalveolar trills) and "softening" of certain consonants.[3]
