Sotirios Alex Manolopoulos[1] (Greek:Σωτήρης Μανωλόπουλος; born June 27, 1970) is a Greek retired professionalbasketball player and current basketball head coach, who is the head coach of Romanian sideDinamo București. Born inAthens, he playedcollege basketball atBoston University. After graduating, he returned to his native Greece, to play professional basketball. He had served as an assistant coach in several teams in theGreek Basket League, before he was appointed thehead coach ofPanathinaikos in May 2015.
Manolopoulos playedcollege basketball atBoston University, with theBoston University Terriers.[2] He was twice named to the America East Academic Honor Roll (1992, 1993).[3] He appeared in 58 games for the Terriers, from 1989 to 1993, averaging 3.6points, 1.1 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per game.[4][5][6][7]
Manolopoulos played professionally withPapagou,Maroussi, andDoukas.[2] While playing with Maroussi, he won theFIBA Saporta Cup2000–01 season championship.[8]
Manolopoulos started hiscoaching career as an assistant coach withPeristeri, in 2004.[8][9] In the2005–06 season, he was appointed the assistant coach ofMakedonikos.[8] He moved toMaroussi for thenext season, with whom he stayed until 2011.[10] He was namedAris' assistant coach in 2011.[9] He was given the assistant coach job ofPanathinaikos, in 2012.[8] On May 4, 2015 he was appointed asPanathinaikos'head coach, after the removal ofDuško Ivanović from the position.[11][12]
On 22 October 2015, he was appointed as an assistant coach forAEK Athens.[13] On 18 December 2015, he was appointed as the head coach ofAEK Athens, after the removal ofDragan Šakota from that same position, so that he could become thegeneral manager of the team. On March 21, 2017, after the departure of head coachJure Zdovc from the club, Manolopoulos became the new head coach of the club, after signing a contract with them, through the year 2018.[14]
