Sophie Bathsheba Thatcher (born(2000-10-18 ) October 18, 2000) is an American actress and musician. After beginning as a child actress in stage plays and minor television roles, she made her feature film debut inProspect (2018), and later had her breakthrough in the seriesYellowjackets (2021–present). Since, she has appeared inThe Book of Boba Fett (2022),The Boogeyman (2023),Heretic (2024), andCompanion (2025), the last of which earned her aCritics' Choice Super Award . In 2026, she was included in theForbes 30 Under 30 list. Thatcher released her debut EP,Pivot & Scrape , in 2024.
Sophie Bathsheba Thatcher[ 2] was born on October 18, 2000 inChicago, Illinois .[ 3] [ 4] She has an older brother named Alexander, a writer; an older sister named Emma, a filmmaker; and an identical twin sister named Ellie, a visual artist.[ 3] She started singing at a young age, and wrote her first song later at 14.[ 5] [ 6] She has described her family as musical, with her mother being a piano teacher.[ 7] [ 8] She herself wasclassically trained into her teens and startedvoice lessons at age 9,[ 8] [ 9] also at one point singing in achoir .[ 8] Her parents divorced when she was 14, and she has described her father as "out of the equation."[ 10]
Thatcher spent her early childhood in Chicago'sHyde Park neighborhood and later grew up inLake Forest, Illinois .[ 11] [ 12] She began acting at age four, entering aperforming arts school to pursuemusical theater andBroadway .[ 5] [ 13] [ 14] In eighth grade, she moved toEvanston, Illinois where she attended Nichols Middle School, also spending time inhomeschooling due to her acting schedule.[ 12] [ 15] She later went toEvanston Township High School for one year before completing her high school education in homeschooling.[ 11] [ 16] : 28:29 Afterwards, she moved toNew York City in order to takeMeisner technique classes.[ 13]
2012–2019: Theater and early screen roles[ edit ] Thatcher began acting professionally at age 11 in a 2012 production ofThe Secret Garden at Music Theater Works in Chicago.[ 4] She was later involved in stage productions ofOliver! andSeussical .[ 17] [ 18] She also portrayedAnne Frank in a 2015 production ofThe Diary of Anne Frank .[ 4] On screen, Thatcher first appeared in the short filmGrowing Strong (2015).[ 19] In 2016, sheguested on thepolice procedural seriesChicago P.D. , an installment in theChicago franchise. That same year, she and her sister Ellie appeared in a music video for the Lincoln Squares' song "Brighter Days".[ 3] [ 20] Later, she made another guest appearance in thehorror seriesThe Exorcist (2016), where she played a younger version ofRegan MacNeil .[ 21]
Thatcher made her feature film debut in thescience fiction filmProspect (2018), starring alongsidePedro Pascal andJay Duplass , the latter of whom plays her father.[ 22] Her performance was praised, withVariety describing her as "a fresh face who tricks us into assuming she's just a callow teen, when in fact, she proves to be the film's toughest character."[ 23] Later in 2018, Thatcher had a recurring role in thethird season of themedical drama seriesChicago Med , another entry in theChicago franchise.[ 24]
The following year, she appeared in Noble Jones' directorial debutThe Tomorrow Man . During this time, Thatcher landed the role of Natalie inYellowjackets . Regarding the process, creatorBart Nickerson said the casting department was searching for "someone who was really free-spirited and unique who could play both a sort of wildness and a vulnerability." Though most of the auditions were held in-person, Thatcher submitted a self-recorded audition tape and was cast as Natalie beforeJuliette Lewis , who portrays the character's adult counterpart.[ 25] The pilot episode was greenlit in September and shot inLos Angeles in November 2019.[ 26]
2020–present:Yellowjackets and film expansion[ edit ] Thatcher at the 2023 Sun Valley Film Festival In 2020, Thatcher starred inWhen the Streetlights Go On , a short-formstreaming series directed byRebecca Thomas , which debuted onQuibi on April 6.[ 27] In November 2020, Thatcher was rumored to be joining theStar Wars franchise but it was unknown in which series she would appear.[ 28] In December 2020,Showtime gaveYellowjackets a series order;[ 29] it premiered in November 2021 to rave reviews and became the second-most streamed series in Showtime's history behindDexter: New Blood .[ 30]
In early 2022, Thatcher appeared in theStar Wars streaming seriesThe Book of Boba Fett onDisney+ .[ 31] In March, she appeared in the music video for rock bandPavement 's 1999 song "Harness Your Hopes ."[ 32] Also that month, she starred in the horror short filmBlink , which premiered atSXSW and was made available onYouTube soon thereafter.[ 33] Later that year, she served as anexecutive producer on her older sister Emma's filmProvo .[ 17] She next starred in the horror filmThe Boogeyman (2023), based onStephen King 'sshort story of the same name .[ 34] [ 35]

In 2022, Thatcher began dating musician Austin Feinstein.[ 49] As of 2024 she was living in theNichols Canyon neighborhood ofLos Angeles ,[ 50] after having lived inSilver Lake with Feinstein the previous year.[ 49] She hasobsessive–compulsive disorder and has previously discussed struggling withbody dysmorphia .[ 13] [ 14]
Although Thatcher was raised in aMormon household, sheleft the church in her early adolescence[ a] and now considers herselfagnostic .[ 56] Her mother was supportive of the decision, and her older siblings had done the same earlier on.[ 10] [ 16] : 43:20 Speaking about the faith, she said, "It was hard growing up Mormon, [...] I don’t think it’s evil, I just don’t think it’s right for me. But as a kid it just made me so angry. Working was a good way to get out of going to church."[ 57]
