TheSonoran hot dog is a style ofhot dog that originated inHermosillo, the capital of the Mexican state ofSonora, in the late 1980s,[1][2] though some theorize its existence as early as the 1940s.[3] It is popular inTucson,[4][5][6][7]Phoenix,[8] and elsewhere in southernArizona.[9] It consists of a hot dog that is wrapped inbacon and grilled, served on abolillo-style hot dog bun, and topped withpinto beans, onions, tomatoes, and a variety of additional condiments, often including mayonnaise, mustard, andjalapeño salsa.[10][11]

The Sonoran hot dog is prepared and sold by vendors called "dogueros" atstreet carts.[1] It was estimated in 2009 that over 200 places in Tucson purveyed the Sonoran hot dog, and that Phoenix had even more.[1]

In 2018, the restaurantEl Guero Canelo won aJames Beard award in theAmerica's Classics category for their Sonoran hot dogs.[12]
