Socotá is a town and municipality in theValderrama Province, part of theColombiandepartment ofBoyacá. The municipality is situated in theEastern Ranges of the ColombianAndes. The urban centre is at an altitude of 2,443 metres (8,015 ft) at a distance of 134 kilometres (83 mi) from the department capitalTunja. It bordersJericó andSativanorte in the north,Pisba andMongua in the south,Chita andTámara,Casanare in the east andSativasur,Tasco,Socha andGámeza in the west.[1]

Etymology

The name Socotá comes fromChibcha and means either "Land of the Sun and farmfields" or "Good harvest".[2]

History

Before theSpanish conquest, Socotá was the northeasternmost part of the looseMuisca Confederation. It was ruled either by theiraca ofSugamuxi or by theTundama based inTundama.[2]

Modern Socotá was founded on January 19, 1602 by Gonzalo Sanchez de Flandes.[1]
