Problem where cognitive and social properties are connected

Sociocognitive orsocio-cognitive is a term especially used whencomplex cognitive and social properties are reciprocally connected and essential for a given problem.

It has been used in academic literature with three different meanings:[1]

  1. It can indicate a branch ofscience, engineering ortechnology, such associo-cognitive research, orsocio-cognitive interactions,
  2. It can refer to the integration of thecognitive andsocial properties ofsystems, processes, functions, as well asmodels, or
  3. It can describe how processes of group formation effect cognition, studied incognitive sociology.

Socio-cognitive engineering

[edit]

Socio-cognitive research ishuman factor and socio-organizational factor based, and assumes an integratedknowledge engineering, environment andbusinessmodeling perspective, therefore it is notsocial cognition which rather is a branch ofpsychology focused onhow people process social information.

Socio-cognitive engineering (SCE) includes a set of theoretical interdisciplinary frameworks, methodologies, methods and software tools for the design ofhuman centred technologies,[2] as well as, for the improvement of large complex human-technology systems.

Both above approaches are applicable for the identification and design of a computer-based semi-/proto-IntelligentDecision Support Systems (IDSS),[3] for the operators and managers of large socially critical systems, for high-risk tasks, such as different types ofemergency anddisaster management, wherehuman errors and socio-cognitive organizationvulnerability can be the cause of serious losses.[4]
