Social philosophy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Branch of philosophy

Social philosophy is the study and interpretation of society and socialinstitutions in terms ofethical values rather than empirical relations.[1] Social philosophers emphasize understanding the social contexts for political, legal, moral and cultural questions, and the development of novel theoretical frameworks, fromsocial ontology tocare ethics tocosmopolitan theories ofdemocracy, natural law, human rights, gender equity andglobal justice.[2]

Subdisciplines

[edit]

There is often a considerable overlap between the questions addressed by social philosophy andethics orvalue theory. Other forms of social philosophy includepolitical philosophy andjurisprudence, which are largely concerned with the societies ofstate andgovernment and their functioning.[citation needed]

Social philosophy, ethics, and political philosophy all share intimate connections with other disciplines in thesocial sciences and thehumanities. In turn, the social sciences themselves are of focal interest to thephilosophy of social science.[citation needed]'

In his book,What is Political Philosophy,Leo Strauss made distinctions between social and political philosophy. Both fields of philosophy center around essentially the same subject, but social philosophy takes those questions from the broader view of "society".[3]

Social philosophy is broadly interdisciplinary, looking at all ofphenomenology, epistemology, andphilosophy of language from a sociological perspective;phenomenological sociology, social epistemology andsociology of language respectively.[4][5]

Relevant topics
