Smokin Jo (bornJoanne Joseph) is a British DJ and record producer fromLondon, England. She is the only female DJ to win the number one DJ in the world award byDJ Mag in 1992.[1][2][3][4]

Musical career

She began her career in 1990 when she got her first set of decks.[5] In 1991, Jo was given an opportunity to play at London gay clubTrade atTurnmills.[6] This led to a residency there that would continue until 1993, launching her career.[7] In 1992 she played inIbiza for the first time, on the terrace atSpace.[5] the same year she was named asDJ Magazines No1 DJ.[8] She also presented theBBC Radio 1 (essential selection) weekly report fromIbiza, between 2002 and 2006.[9]

Jo has gigged all over the world,[10] and in every big club night, playing as far and wide as Japan, Germany, Brazil, Greece, USA (includingSpace in Miami) China and Singapore. In the UK she has played Ministry of Sound,Fabric, XOYO, The Beams, Printworks in London. She still plays inIbiza for Glitterbox.
