Slite is alocality situated inGotland Municipality,Gotland County, on the island ofGotland, Sweden with 1,500 inhabitants in 2014.[2]
Slite is situated on the northern east coast of Gotland. The town is divided by the Sjuströmmar inlet, connecting Bogevik bay with theBaltic Sea.[3] The north, and main part, of the town is situated inOthemsocken and the part south of Sjuströmmar is inBoge socken.[4]
Outside Slite is a smallarchipelago called Slite skärgård.[5] The largest island isAsunden with itsprotectedstack area. Close to the south tip of Asunden is the smallerGrunnet island. The island closest to Sjuströmmar isEnholmen whereKarlsvärd Fortress is situated.[6][7][8][9]
High on a cliff in the north part of Slite is the modernSlite Church built in 1959–60. It is designed by Danish architect Holger Jensen.[10] As of 2019[update], Slite Church belongs to Othem-Bogeparish in Norra Gotlandspastorat, along with the churches inOthem andBoge.[11][12]
For a long time Slite was an important place for trade and business; nowadays tourism is an important source of income along with the stone and gravel industry, producing concrete from raw material oflimestone from nearbyquarries. The landscape outside Slite is dominated by theHeidelberg Materials Cement Sverige AB limestone quarry[1].
In 1902–1953, Slite was connected toRoma by the 33 km (21 mi) Slite-Roma railway.[13]
The annual Slite Market is the first of the major autumn markets on Gotland. There are five official markets held on the island in August–October: Slite,Havdhem,Kräklingbo,Klintehamn andHemse, each usually spanning a weekend.[14][15]
