Skywalker Sound (formerly known asSprocket Systems and sometimesSkywalker Sound North) is the Americansound effects, sound design, sound editing, sound mixing, andmusic recording division ofLucasfilm. Founded in 1975, the company's main facilities are located atGeorge Lucas'sSkywalker Ranch inLucas Valley, nearNicasio, California.[1]

History

[edit]

Skywalker Sound was founded in 1975 asSprocket Systems inSan Anselmo, California.

While located in San Anselmo, Sprocket Systems came into contact with residents. For instance, Kentfield residentPat Welsh was "discovered" while shopping at a camera store and went on to provide the voice forE.T.. During the sound recording ofRaiders of the Lost Ark,Harrison Ford practiced hisbullwhip technique in the parking lot.[2]

Sprocket Systems moved from San Anselmo following a dangerous flood in January 1982. The company renamed Skywalker Sound in 1987 after the company moved toSkywalker Ranch.

Skywalker Sound's staff ofsound designers andre-recording mixers have either won or been nominated for anAcademy Award forBest Sound andBest Sound Editing every year sinceStar Wars in 1977; in that year,Ben Burtt received aSpecial Achievement Academy Award, since the category for Sound Editing had not yet been established. Skywalker Sound won 15 Academy Awards and received 62 nominations.

Sound mixing, editorial, and music scoring stages are all located in a central "Tech Building," with dining areas and living quarters in the vicinity, but separate from the main work area.

In 2012,The Walt Disney Company acquired Skywalker Sound as part of its purchase of Lucasfilm.
