Sky Studios is a production company founded bySky in June 2019 with assets from the now defunctSky Vision.[2] It develops, produces and funds original drama, comedy and documentary, and has investments in a number of production businesses in the UK and US:Love Productions (wholly owned), Blast Films!, Sugar Films,True North Productions, Chrysalis Vision,True to Nature, Longboat Pictures and The Lighthouse[3][4] in the United Kingdom;Jupiter Entertainment, Talos Films, Znak & Co. and Catalina Content[5] in the United States.[6]
As part of the launch of Sky Studios, the broadcaster also announced that they would double their spend on original productions to over $1.3 billion over the next five years.[7][8]
In September 2019, Sky Studios announced they were launching a US-arm calledThe Hive, based in New York and Tennessee, utilising expertise fromJupiter Entertainment.[9][10] In December 2021, Sky Studios sold their minority stake inBad Wolf toSony Pictures Television.[11][12]
In December 2019, Sky announced plans to develop Sky Studios Elstree.[13] The facility is being built at Rowley Lane,Borehamwood, located close to the existingElstree Studios. The final sound stage to be completed was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in March 2023[14] and the completion of the whole project was celebrated with Pop Up Cinema screenings for local residents in October 2023.[15] The studio provides production space for Sky's original content as well as film and TV productions fromNBCUniversal, which is owned by Sky's parent companyComcast.[16]
The facility has 13 stages ranging from 10,000 sq ft to 30,000 sq ft.[17] The site also housespost-production facilities and an on-site screening cinema.[18]
Sky Studios has creative partnerships in place with a range of production companies including Merman TV[19] (founded bySharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford), Rangabee[20] (founded byRomesh Ranganathan and Benjamin Green), The Apartment[21] (part ofFremantle and led byLorenzo Mieli) and anoverall deal with German filmmaker Philipp Leinemann.[22]
