The area is a largely hilly terrain, mostly downwind fromLake Erie,Lake Ontario and theFinger Lakes, along theEastern Continental Divide between theGreat Lakes, theMississippi River andSusquehanna River watersheds. The result of this is that throughorographic lift, a significant amount oflake effect snow falls there during the months of November, December and January.
