In the2006 state assembly elections,[7] Harish Chandra Barman ofCPI(M) won the Sitalkuchi seat defeating his nearest rival Lalit Chandra Pramanik ofTrinamool Congress. Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Sudhir Pramanik of CPI(M) defeated Birendra Narayan Barma ofCongress in 2001[8] and 1996,[9] Ambika Charan Ray of Congress in 1991,[10] Sabita Roy of Congress in 1987,[11] and Birendranath Roy of Congress in 1982[12] and 1977.[13][14]
Bejoy Kumar Roy of Forward Bloc won the Sitalkuchi seat in1962.[15]
