Sirystes is agenus ofbirds in thetyrant flycatcherfamily,Tyrannidae that are found in Middle and South America. They used to be all consideredconspecific. Vocal differences were used to separated thesuperspecies into four distinct taxa.
The genusSirystes was introduced in 1860 by the German ornithologistsJean Cabanis andFerdinand Heine to accommodate a single species,Muscicapa sibilatorVieillot, 1818, thesibilant sirystes. This is therefore considered to be thetype species.[1][2] The genus name is fromAncient Greek συριστης/suristēs meaning "piper" from συριζω/surizō meaning "to play the pipes".[3] The four species in the genus were formerly all considered to beconspecific.[2] The subspecies were separated based primarily on the differences in their vocalization.[4]
