Sir Hugh Fraser, 2nd Baronet (18 December 1936 – 5 May 1987[1]) formerly2nd Baron Fraser of Allander, was a Britishchairman of theHouse of Fraser,Harrods,George Outram and Company, andWhyte and Mackay. He lived atMugdock, nearMilngavie,Scotland. He was the son ofHugh Fraser, 1st Baron Fraser of Allander, and inherited theBarony of Fraser of Allander on his father's death in 1966, but disclaimed it for life the same year.[2] He has three daughters.[3] He was not related to the politicianSir Hugh Fraser.

Career

Fraser was educated atSt Mary's School, Melrose andKelvinside Academy.[4] He was given anhonorary doctorate by theUniversity of Stirling,[5] where one of the student residences is now namedFraser of Allander after him. In 1981, he gifted the Mugdock Castle estate (purchased by his father) to the regional council as acountry park.[6] In 1960, he established the Hugh Fraser Foundation for charitable work.[3][7] He was also a major benefactor to the Glasgow Scout Association and was chairman ofDumbarton Football Club.

It was alleged by aChannel 5 documentary that Fraser put up the money for an attempted abduction ofRonnie Biggs from Brazil, so the latter could stand trial in Britain for his part in theGreat Train Robbery.[8]

Hugh Fraser died fromcancer in 1987, aged 50.[2][7][3]
