Sinopliosaurus (meaning "Chinese more lizard") is adubiousgenus ofpliosauroidplesiosaur.[1] It lived during theAptian andAlbian stages of theEarly Cretaceous[2] (disputedSinopliosaurus remains have been dated to theToarcian age and were found in theZiliujing Formation)[3] of thePeople's Republic of China - its exact age is unknown. The type species,Sinopliosaurus weiyuanensis, was named and described in 1944 byYang Zhongjian.[3] One species,"S."fusuiensis, was later shown to be based on teeth from aspinosauridtheropoddinosaur which is now known asSiamosaurus.[1]S. weiyuanensis was considered as a freshwater plesiosaur.[4]
Theholotype,IVPP V140, consists of threevertebrae and atooth, discovered in a layer of theLianmugin Formation (Tugulu Group).[3][5]
