TheSinlung Hills Council (SHC) is a local body government inMizoram. Unlike otherautonomous district councils in Mizoram, the council have a limited administrative autonomy.[1] It was created on July 9, 2018, as an administrative body for theHmar people and encompasses Hmar-dominated area of NorthernMizoram in theAizawl,Kolasib andSaitual districts.[2] The term Sinlung refers to the supposed ancestral origin of theHmar people.[3] Its headquarters is in Aizawl.[4]
The Sinlung Hills Council was formed as a result of the peace accord signed between the Mizoram state government andHmar People's Convention (Democratic), after the signing which about 100 Hmar militants laid down their arms.[5]
The council comprises 31 villages in the Hmar-dominated northeastern part of Mizoram. It covers three assembly constituencies in the districts of Aizawl, Kolasib and Saitual.[2]
The council has 14 members. 12 of whom are elected and 2 are nominated. The council is headed by a Chief Executive Member.[6]
About 20,914 voters were eligible to vote for the election. It was the first election since its election.[7] TheMNF-HPC alliance won 10 seats, and Independents won 2 seats.[6]
About 23,789 voters were eligible to vote including 11,914 female voters.[6] TheMNF secured a majority with 8 seats, while theZPM won 3 seat,Congress won one seat.[8]
