Sinú River (Spanish:Río Sinú), is a river in northwesternColombia that flows mostly through theCórdoba Department and into the Caribbean. It is the third most important river in theCaribbean Region, after theMagdalena River and theCauca River. It is born in theAntioquia Department, flowing south to north for 415 kilometres (258 mi) until flowing into the Caribbean Sea. The river isnavigable for only half of its length, 200 kilometres (120 mi) starting inMontería, the largest city in its basin. Also, this river is the maintourist attraction of Montería decorated with the first avenue when it passes by Montería.
The river flows between the eastern and middle prongs of the Cordillera Occidental.[1]
The river flows through theSinú Valley dry forests ecoregion.[2]In general, the aquatic fauna shows connections with theMagdalena–Cauca River basin, but also theAtrato River basin. There has been extensivehabitat destruction in the region, causing problems to many species in the area. Two parrots that areendemic to the river valley, the Sinúbrown-throated parakeet[3] (Aratinga pertinax griseipecta) and theSinú parakeet (Pyrrhura picta subandina), have not been recorded for decades and are fearedextinct.[4]
The UrraDam built by the companyUrrá is on the Sinú River.
