Simon "Si"Spurrier[1] (born 2 May 1981) is a Britishcomics writer and novelist, who has previously worked as a cook, a bookseller, and anart director for theBBC.

Getting his start in comics with theBritish small press, he went on to write his own series for2000 AD, likeLobster Random,Bec & Kawl,The Simping Detective andHarry Kipling, as well as a number of stories for the flagship characterJudge Dredd. In recent years he has broken into theAmerican comic book industry, writing mainly forMarvel Comics. He also wroteMarvel'sX-Force in 2014 and 2015, which starred the charactersCable,Psylocke,Marrow andFantomex.[2]

He started co-writingStar Wars: Doctor Aphra fromMarvel Comics withKieron Gillen in November 2017 on issues #14-19, taking over with issue #20 in May 2018.

Simon has also written a number of novels, initially on other people'sproperties, but in 2006 he signed a two-book contract withHodder Headline, the first of which wasContract (2007) and the secondA Serpent Uncoiled (2011).[citation needed]

Career

Simon Spurrier writes mainly for the British comic2000 AD but has also written comic-strips for the anthologyWarhammer Monthly,[3] as well as contributing written articles, stories and reviews to theJudge Dredd Megazine. He is the creator ofLobster Random (withCarl Critchlow),The Simping Detective (withFrazer Irving),From Grace (also with Irving),Zancudo (a belated follow-up toAnt Wars) withCam Kennedy andBec & Kawl (withSteve Roberts).

Spurrier has done a number ofwork for hire books, writing one2000 AD themed novel forBlack Flame press, and three science fiction novels for theBlack Library, as well as an upcoming book forAbaddon Books. In May 2006 he signed a two-book contract withHodder Headline. The first novel, a "post-pulp" occult-crime-comedy, is titledContract. A limited edition hardback was released in May 2007, and the mass-market paperback is published on 4 October 2007.

He has createdGutsville withFrazer Irving[4][5] andSilver Surfer: In Thy Name.[6][7]

His other projects include more work forMarvel likeGhost Rider Annual #2,[8] theone-shot "Wolverine: Dangerous Game,"[9]Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider mini-series withJavier Saltares,[10][11][12] "Conqueror" anewuniversal one-shot,Punisher War Journal Annual #1,[13] andX-Men Legacy vol.2, starring the characterLegion.[14] He also wrote a short story forDark Horse Presents called "In Fetu."[15]

In July 2019, it was announced that Spurrier would be writing DC'sHellblazer relaunch as part ofThe Sandman Universe line of comics. The relaunched series, written by Spurrier and illustrated by Aaron Campbell, begins after the events of the 1990 miniseriesThe Books of Magic.Hellblazer began with a one-shot onHalloween 2019, before becoming a regular series in November that same year.[16] Due to theCOVID-19 pandemic, the series was prematurely canceled after 12 issues.[17] However, duringNew York Comic Con 2023, it was revealed that the series would getting a revival miniseries calledJohn Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America, with Spurrier and Campbell returning and publication set to begin in January 2024.[18]

In March 2023, it was announced that Spurrier would becoming the writer ofThe Flash when the book relaunches in September as a part of theDawn of DC initiative.[19] In April 2023, Spurrier was revealed to be writingUncanny Spider-Man, as a part ofFall of X, and focuses onNightcrawler donning a Spider-Man costume and defending New York City following the events of the 2023Hellfire Gala.[20]
